Before a price-only product CSV update

A price change can carry other edits with it. Before importing, compare a fresh product export with the exact file you plan to import. Keep an untouched backup.
An empty cell is not an omitted column
With Shopify's "Overwrite products with matching handles" option selected, a blank in an included non-required column can overwrite the existing value with a blank. A non-required column left out of the CSV generally leaves that stored value unchanged.
For example, suppose the existing Vendor is "Example Studio". Including a Vendor column with an empty cell is different from leaving the Vendor column out entirely. The first can clear the value during overwrite; the second generally preserves it.
Do not turn this into a rule to delete every column except price. Some columns depend on other columns. Shopify warns that including SKU without the corresponding Option1 name and Option1 value can remove variant option data. Changing option values can replace variant IDs and break third-party dependencies.
A price-only review checklist
- Start with a fresh export from the intended store. Preserve an untouched copy. Use the current Shopify column format and check the current documentation before import.
- Write down the intended change: which variants, which price fields, and the expected direction and size. A 90% drop may be deliberate, but deserves a second look.
- Compare the proposed file against the baseline. Check every changed non-price field, included blank, missing/new column, duplicate identity and unmatched row. Do not treat unmatchable rows as safe.
- Check variant option names and values. Do not assume SKU alone is a safe matching identity. Avoid casual spreadsheet sorting: Shopify warns it can disassociate variant or image rows.
- Review the overwrite choice in Shopify. If overwrite is not selected, matching existing handles are ignored during import. Price Update Review's review assumes overwrite is selected; it does not control that setting.
- Test a small subset independently, review the import preview and check the resulting products in Shopify before expanding the update. A Price Update Review report is a review prompt, not an import approval or recovery guarantee.
What Price Update Review can and cannot add
Price Update Review compares two files locally in your browser and flags changes outside a price-only scope. It has no store connection and cannot see current store data, validate Shopify acceptance, restore overwritten data or import for you. Its conservative row matching leaves ambiguous and unmatched rows unresolved.
Try the synthetic example before choosing any real files. Do not send catalog CSVs, reports or passwords as feedback. Reports can contain catalog values even though file processing is local.
